Title: 'Year of the Rat'

The rat in this, and all of my paintings, is me, or at least an extension of me. I was born in the Chinese year of the rat, and to some extent have felt like a drowning one ever since. I had only been in America for a couple of years when I painted this. I could not quite adjust to it at the time. I had left my family and friends behind. I had $8 in my pocket and rent was due. I felt alone and very unloved. I let the shape and contour of this picture underline just how dreadful this particular year, (1990) really was. Materials used are enamel paints on a styrene material.
